Teaser Tuesday – #4: Finnikin of the Rock (Lumatere Chronicles #1) by Melina Marchetta

May 15, 2012 Finnikin of the Rock, Melina Marchetta, Teaser Tuesday, Viking Australia 14

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

– Grab your current read
– Open to a random page
– Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page
– BE CAREFUL NOT TO INCLUDE SPOILERS!! (make sure that what you share doesn’t give too much away! You don’t want to ruin the book for others!)
– Share the title and author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

I am currently reading two books right now but decided to tease Finnikin of the Rock, since I just started Revived. This is the first book I have read by the well-known Aussie author and I am really enjoying it! I plan to dig into some of her contemporary fictions over the summer.

From Goodreads:

At the age of nine, Finnikin is warned by the gods that he must sacrifice a pound of flesh to save his kingdom. He stands on the rock of the three wonders with his friend Prince Balthazar and Balthazar’s cousin, Lucian, and together they mix their blood to safeguard Lumatere.

But all safety is shattered during the five days of the unspeakable, when the king and queen and their children are brutally murdered in the palace. An impostor seizes the throne, a curse binds all who remain inside Lumatere’s walls, and those who escape are left to roam the land as exiles, dying by the thousands in fever camps.

Ten years later, Finnikin is summoned to another rock—to meet Evanjalin, a young novice with a startling claim: Balthazar, heir to the throne of Lumatere, is alive. This arrogant young woman claims she’ll lead Finnikin and his mentor, Sir Topher, to the prince. Instead, her leadership points them perilously toward home. Does Finnikin dare believe that Lumatere might one day rise united? Evanjalin is not what she seems, and the startling truth will test Finnikin’s faith not only in her but in all he knows to be true about himself and his destiny.

In a bold departure from her acclaimed contemporary novels, Printz Medalist Melina Marchetta has crafted an epic fantasy of ancient magic, feudal intrigue, romance, and bloodshed that will rivet you from the first page.

The Teaser:

Sir Topher finally looked up. “Because any hope beyond that, my boy, would be too much. I feared we would drown in it.”

“Then I choose to drown,” Finnikin said. “In hope. Rather than float into nothing. Maybe you are right, Trevanion,” he said, turning back to his father. “But it is her hope that bewitches me, and that hope I may never get out of my system, no matter how many times she’s to be gotten. Can you not see it burning in her eyes? Does it not make you want to look away when you have none to give in return? Her hope fills me with… something other than this dull weight I wake with each morning.”              ebook pg. 101

One of my favorite passages so far in the book. Please feel free to leave me a teaser from what you are currently reading in the comments below! Or a link if you have a blog! 🙂

I’m not even joking when I say that EVERYONE seems to be loving Melina Marchetta, and I feel like face-palming because I’ve never read one of her books before! x) Haha I’m definitely planning on reading some of her contemporaries this summer though too — and can I just say that I love the name Finnikin? Reminds me a little bit of Finnick from THG, and that’s always a good thing! 😉

Thanks for giving me a taste of Melina’s writing, Sara! I hope you like this one AND Revived! 🙂 <3

I’ll give you a tease from the book I finished last night – First Comes Love.

“Is there anything you don’t like about me?” I ask, because I want to know how to be better. How to be half the person she is.
