MORE Blog Tour: Author Interview with T.M. Franklin

October 2, 2012 Author Interview, Blog Tour, More, T.M. Franklin, The Writer's Coffee Shop 9

Today as part of the MORE Blog Tour, I am interviewing the lovely author, T.M. Franklin! (My questions and a few responses to her answers will be in Bold.)

1. What inspired you to write MORE?
The original idea came from references to the mysterious Nephilim in the book of Genesis. It says “sons of God” went to “daughters of men” and had children with them. There’s debate over whether the Nephilim were actually the “sons of God” or the offspring of these forbidden unions. This reference is right before God decides to do away with the wickedness in the world with the Great Flood. It was the idea of these “sons of God” being punished for their intimacy with humans that led to the idea of the Race and the Half-Breeds. The rest came from there.

2. Ava needs a physics tutor in MORE, what class in school do you wish you had a hot tutor for? *wink wink*
Oh, chemistry definitely. I decided, because I took chemistry in high school, that I could handle second year chemistry as a freshman. What a mistake! I ended up with a C in that class and almost lost my scholarship.

Of course, if the tutor was hot, it probably wouldn’t have improved my grade.

Er, probably not. LOL 😉

3. What type of magical power do you wish you could have?
I’ve always thought it would be cool to be able to fly. Think about how you could see the world – landing on the top of the pyramids, checking out the deepest jungles without having to hike through them – plus you could avoid traffic on your way to work!

Avoiding traffic is a huge benefit, IMO.

4. What were some of your challenges while writing? (research, character names, etc)
The biggest challenge for me was, and always seems to be, maintaining continuity. For example, Caleb has an ability to shift. But how far can he shift in one go? How far is it from Northwestern Iowa where he and Ava go to college, to the Canadian border? How long would it take them to shift there, given he has to rest in between shifts? These are all things I had to take into consideration.

Sometimes it’s setting issues. I had a scene in a mountain meadow with swaying grass and pretty flowers. It was lovely, but it was the middle of November! I sometimes get caught up in the scene and have to be reminded of logistics. I’m so thankful to my editors for helping me with that!

5. What type of atmosphere do you prefer to write in? (home, music, etc)
I usually write in one of three places: at my kitchen table, at my desk in my office (when it’s slow) or in a recliner in front of the television. I can’t write with music going. I find it too distracting. But the TV in the background actually seems to help me concentrate. I think it’s just a habit left over from working in a noisy newsroom where we had several TVs and scanners going at all times.

Weirdly, I have to read with background noise so I know what you mean!

6. We kind of see two sides to Caleb in MORE, do you prefer the hot and muscular type guy or the cute and nerdy?
I prefer cute, nerdy Caleb. I really think of that as the “true” Caleb, at least as far as his personality is concerned. The hot Caleb is an outward appearance, but more of a costume than the real him.

In real life, I think cute and nerdy IS hot. 🙂

7. Did you have any input in the cover design? (Which is so fitting, by the way!)
I actually designed the cover. So yes! 🙂

Ooooh, you did a great job with it! It’s actually a perfect cover for the storyline.

8. Describe your novel, twitter-style, in 140 characters or less.
Ugh. I had trouble doing it in 175 words! But I’ll try…

A story about a girl, who finds out the world is MORE than she thought, & the young man who puts his own life on the line to keep her safe.

139! BOOYAH!!! 🙂

9. Anything you can share with us about the sequel?
Oh, let’s see. There is an excerpt in the back of MORE, so you’ll get a glimpse there. Without giving too much away, I can say we will learn a lot more about both Caleb’s and Ava’s backgrounds, in particular their families, including Ava’s biological parents. We’ll also learn more about why some not-so-savory characters have such an interest in Ava. And we’ll get to know Tiernan better, which I’m excited about. I actually like him quite a lot.

EEP! Can’t wait!

That is it for the interview! I want to thank T.M. Franklin for stopping by and congratulations of the debut of MORE on October 4th! You can check out my review HERE!

About the Book:

Ava Michaels used to think she was special.

As a child, she fantasized about having magical powers . . . making things happen. But Ava grew up and eventually accepted the fact that her childish dreams were just that, and maybe a normal life wasn’t so bad after all.

Now a young college student, Ava meets Caleb Foster, a brilliant and mysterious man who’s supposed to help her pass Physics, but in reality has another mission in mind. What he shows Ava challenges her view of the world, shaking it to its very core.

Because Caleb isn’t quite what he seems. In fact, he’s not entirely human, and he’s not the only one.

Together, the duo faces a threat from an ancient race bound to protect humans, but only after protecting their own secrets—secrets they fear Ava may expose. Fighting to survive, Ava soon learns she’s not actually normal . . . she’s not even just special.

She’s a little bit more.

About the Author:

T.M. Franklin started out her career writing non-fiction in a television newsroom. Graduating with a B.A. in Communications specializing in broadcast journalism and production, she worked for nine years as a major market television news producer, and garnered two regional Emmy Awards, before she resigned to be a full-time mom and part-time freelance writer. After writing and unsuccessfully querying a novel that she now admits, “is not that great,” she decided to follow the advice of one of the agents who turned her down—write some more and get better at it. Her first published novel, MORE, was born during National Novel Writing month, a challenge to write a novel in thirty days.

She lives in the Pacific Northwest with her husband, Mike, is mom to two boys, Justin and Ryan, and has an enormous black dog named Rocky who’s always lying nearby while she’s writing. Whether he’s soothed by the clicking of the computer keys or just waiting for someone to rub his belly is up for debate.
