A new demon appears, one linked by blood and secrecy to Mortmain, the man who plans to use his army of pitiless automatons, the Infernal Devices, to destroy the Shadowhunters. **SPOILER FREE**

Even though I want nothing more than to discuss this book in detail with everybody, I will keep this review spoiler-free because, well, that’s how I prefer to remain with the close of a series. It adds a little more of that surprise and shock factor I love so much.

This will be short and sweet. I can not say enough good things about this book. Wonderful, heart-wrenching, beautiful, moving, touching, PERFECT – those are just a few words that come to mind because it’s hard to articulate anything else. It’s funny because when I first read Clockwork Angel years ago, I did so with trepidation. I had just finished the first 3 books in The Mortal Instruments series and I thought for sure I would not like this prequel series. For one, I don’t usually read a lot of historical fiction. I’m not really sure why, and I’ve pretty much loved everything I’ve read in the genre so it’s a little silly for me to have those feelings. There is also an element of steampunk, which again, nothing I have an interest in. But I gave it a shot. And I’m so glad I did because I can’t imagine not having this series in my life.

Even though I thought Clockwork Angel was a strong start to this series, it wasn’t until the second installment, Clockwork Prince, that I completely fell in love with the characters. Heading into Clockwork Princess, to say I was invested would be an understatement. I had theories constantly evolving in my head. How can this love triangle possibly end well? Who is Brother Zachariah? What is up with that necklace? Who is Tessa really? Everything was answered and went beyond my expectations.

Cassandra Clare managed to do the impossible. She took one of the most difficult love triangles I have read, and I say difficult because both guys are wonderful and love Tessa so deeply, and managed to end it so satisfyingly. My heart ached, still aches, with both happiness and grief to the point that it completely consumed me in ways I did not expect or feel before. You know the phrase, ALL THE FEELS? Yeah, well this is the epitome of that. Bawling like a baby, I have never been more happy with how a series has played out.

It wasn’t all sad, of course. We get to see how all the other characters tangle together. I must say, there were a lot of great one liners by all of them. I expect that from Will, but Sophie surprised me! I thoroughly enjoyed how they all played into the events going on around them as well as what is to come in their future. I managed to avoid the family tree until I finished but even that made me tear up.

What may make this whole book, and series, is the beautiful friendship between Will and Jem. And when I say friendship, that’s putting it lightly. There is so much more to their relationship. Never have I seen two characters love each other so fiercely, willing to die to protect the other. Every moment between the two of them is special. Tears were brought to my eyes repeatedly. Writing this just thinking about them is doing to same, in fact.

If you have not started this series, I implore you to give these books a try, just so you can meet these wonderful characters and the love they have for each other.

I think the following words from a very wise man seem fitting here:

“Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened.” ― Dr. Seuss

Spoilers Below!

I could go on and on with quotes I loved from this book, but I’ll narrow it done to a few. Of course, these are spoilery. Please highlight to see quotes! DO NOT READ UNLESS YOU’VE READ CLOCKWORK PRINCESS!

“I am nothing if not gracious,” Will said. His eyes searched Jem’s face, that face as familiar to him as his own. “And determined. You will not leave me. Not while I live.”

“You remember what else I said to you that day in the drawing room,” he said. “I want you to be happy, and him to be happy. And yet when you walk that aisle to meet him and join yourselves forever you will walk an invisible path of the shards of my heart, Tessa. I would give over my own life for either of yours. I would give over my own life for your happiness. I thought perhaps that when you told me you did not love me that my own feelings would fall away at atrophy, but they have not. They have grown every day. I love you now more desperately, this moment, than I have ever loved you before, and in an hour I will love you more than that. It is unfair to tell you this, I know, when you can do nothing about it.” He took a shuddering breath. “How you must despise me.”

“I see it,” Gideon said in a low voice. “I am not blind, and we are people of many scars. I see it, but it is not ugly. It is just another beautiful part of the most beautiful girl I have ever seen.”

Jem touched the parabatai rune on his shoulder, through the thin material of his nightshirt. “I am not alone,” he said. “Wherever we are, we are as one.”

“I told you before, Jem, that you would not leave me,” Will said, his bloody hand on the hilt of the dagger. “And you are still with me. When I breathe, I will think of you, for without you I would have been dead years ago. When I wake up and when I sleep, when I lift up my hands to defend myself or when I lie down to die, you will be with me. You say we are born and born again. I say there is a river that divides the dead and the living. What I do know is that if we are born again, I will meet you in another life, and if there is a river, you will wait on the shores for me to come to you, so that we can cross together.”

“We spoke of how to say good-bye,” Jem said. “When Jonathan bid farewell to David, he said, ‘Go in peace, for as much as we have sworn, both of us, saying the Lord be between me and thee, forever.’ They did not see each other again, but they did not forget. So it will be with us. When I am Brother Zachariah, when I no longer see the world with my human eyes, I will still be in some parts the Jem you knew, and I will see you with the eyes of my heart.”

Will’s grin widened. “Oh, him,” he said. “This is Cecily’s – friend, Mr. Gabriel Lightworm.”

Please read these books if you have not done so already! And if you have and want to discuss and flail about the details, feel free to email me!

Thank you for spoiler alert! I’ll have to hid somewhere until this book comes to me (please TBD!!) but I’m so happy you enjoyed it. Actually everyone seem to love it. I can’t wait to read it. Great review 🙂

Loved this book! I think?! LOL I’ve been having a million discussion in a million different forums and on my review on goodreads. I love Jem so much! Will not so much LOL But I did really love their friendship. When they first met even made me want to cry. I cried the whole way through. I also was a little reluctant to start this prequel series as I am not a historical reader but since it has Jem I ended up loving it even more than the Mortal Instruements. I went to Cassie’s signing on Saturday and it was so fun to meet her.

I was waiting for this review, and here it is! I adored this book–painful and sad, but so so beautiful, too. I love the quotes you chose to feature, Sara. But oh, our poor hearts…I don’t know if they’ll ever recover.

Loved your review. Totally agree on how well the love triangle was handled.

Phew, I managed to get past the SPOILERS BELOW section without seeing anything LOL. I haven’t started this series yet but I have read her other books. I do really like love triangles that are done well so I can’t wait to start this series!

  5. Candace

Perfect review! I felt the same way. I was stressed about that love triangle but it worked out perfectly! You picked some amazing quotes!

  6. Ashley G.

This was an amazing review! You did a great job of not spoiling anything! I can’t wait to read this book! Hopefully, I will get to it very soon!

  7. Lauren

I was looking forward to your thoughts on this—and what a perfect, lovely review! This book really did give me all the feels. The love triangle was handled wonderfully.

“My heart ached, still aches, with both happiness and grief to the point that it completely consumed me in ways I did not expect or feel before.” < ---oh, this perfectly describes EXACTLY how I feel. Love the Dr. Seuss quote too. 🙂

  8. Jen Ryland/YA Romantics

On vacation and on my phone so I think I’ll have to read the quotes later. And we’ve emailed about out shared love for the Jem and Will relationship. I guess that was my concern about the triangle – that it would jeopardize that. But I was as happy as I think I could be with the outcome 🙂

  9. Lauren @ Love is not a triangle

I completely agree with this! FEELS!!!!!!!!!! And you’re right, the love between Jem and Will really set this triangle, and series apart. No way could this book have stood up without that. I can’t believe CC was able to write such a heartbreaking series and also make it satisfying. That is a feat of wonder in and of itself! LOVE the way you did the spoiler quotes too. Good idea! Great review!

Ah, I was worried about that bromance, too, but I’m so glad they never wavered in their friendship. It was said many times but the fact that all three loved each other made this the most difficult love triangle I’ve ever encountered. But it also makes it my favorite. Great review…loved every quote you pulled, too. 🙂

  11. Nereyda @Mostly YA Book Obsessed

Nope! Not even going to try to skim your review (even though it’s spoiler free). I haven’t read any of the books so anything really would kind of be a spoiler for me. I SOOOOO want to read this series so I have been staying away from anything Cassandra Clare or TID related 🙂

  12. Giselle

Even though I haven’t read Clockwork Angel or Clockwork Prince yet, I have the urge to look at the spoiler section! Bahaha. I heard this series was awesome though and you’re not the first who I see they really got into it in the sequel which is awesome since so often sequels disappoint me! I really gotta catch up on this series anyways >.<

  13. Lindy Gomez

Beautiful review Sara! I can’t wait to read Clockwork Princess. I love the Infernal Devices Series and the brotherhood between Will and Jem. This is such an awesome love triangle, because both guys are amazing, and I’m just as torn between the both of them as Tessa is! II really enjoyed your review, and know I’m going to love this story. I love reading books that make me feel so much emotion!

What a great review Sara! I’m glad you enjoyed this series so much =D I hadn’t realized these were prequels to The Mortal Instrument Series (apparently I’m oblivious.) I haven’t read either. It’s been awhile since I got totally caught up in a series, maybe I should try these!

  15. Plumber Seattle

No words can describe the emotions this book has brought upon me. I am definitely a fan. I hated to put it down and wanted more as I kept reading. Even at the end I wanted more. Cassandra Clare is a great writer and storyteller.
