From Goodreads:

A cross between the Gone series and Lord of the Flies, Quarantine #2: The Saints contunues this frenetically paced and scary young adult series that illustrates just how deadly high school can be.

Nothing was worse than being locked in—until they opened the door…
McKinley High has been a battle ground for eighteen months since a virus outbreak led to a military quarantine of the school. When the doors finally open, Will and Lucy will think their nightmare is finished. But they are gravely mistaken.

As a new group of teens enters the school and gains popularity, Will and Lucy join new gangs. An epic party on the quad full of real food and drinks, where kids hookup and actually interact with members of other gangs seemed to signal a new, easier existence. Soom after though, the world inside McKinley takes a startling turn for the worse, and Will and Lucy will have to fight harder than ever to survive.
The Saints brings readers back to the dark and deadly halls of McKinley High and the QUARANTINE series.

If I had to sum up this book, this series, in one word it would be CRAZY! It is intense, it is heart-pounding and it is quite the addictive read!

Last year I read the first book in the series, Quarantine: The Loners, and was hooked! The series follows kids trapped inside of a school on quarantine after a virus outbreak. What ensues is complete chaos. With limited supplies, the kids break off into gangs that fight for the food, supplies and status. I believe this sequel starts off right where we were left in the first book. Unfortunately I forgot a lot of the details and though there is a bit of a recap, I still found myself wishing all of the details were fresh in my mind with a re-read.

With David now on the outside at the end of the last book, we follow his little brother Will, Lucy once again, and a few new additions. Some of the kids are able to escape at the beginning but the outside is quickly blocked off again after a new gang enters the fray. The Loners we grew to love split up and everything changes for our characters.

The shock factor is once again present where I find myself amazed at how the authors continue to surprise us. They don’t hold nothing back and the story is filled with violence, gore and what-the-fuckery. I was squicked out on more than one occasion. But what’s different this time around is that there is a reprieve from the fighting and the kids all find themselves having fun. Gates is the leader of the new gang that entered the school, the Saints, and he becomes somewhat of a hero among the teens as he makes demands for better supplies – tvs, video games, junk food, as well as the bizarre – motorcycle and a… pig? The kid is seriously crazytown with suicidal type tendencies for danger and a new obsession with Will.

As with the first, you must suspend disbelief when you read these books, this one moreso than the first book in my opinion. Just like with Lord of the Flies, I think if you dump kids together with no adults, fighting to survive, bad things can very well happen. And trust me, they do. Dump in junk food, condoms and alcohol and yes, these kids are partying non-stop. The plausibility factor really doesn’t affect me too much because it is hard to put these books down. I never know what to expect and I really like that in a read. That’s what keeps me so engrossed in this series.

Once again, the ending left me anxious for the next book and I can’t wait to find out what will happen next for these teens in the quarantine!

About Quarantine: The Loners

From Goodreads:
“As original as The Hunger Games, set within the walls of a high school exactly like yours.” – Kami Garcia, New York Times best-selling co-author of the Beautiful Creatures novels

It was just another ordinary day at McKinley High—until a massive explosion devastated the school. When loner David Thorpe tried to help his English teacher to safety, the teacher convulsed and died right in front of him. And that was just the beginning.

A year later, McKinley has descended into chaos. All the students are infected with a virus that makes them deadly to adults. The school is under military quarantine. The teachers are gone. Violent gangs have formed based on high school social cliques. Without a gang, you’re as good as dead. And David has no gang. It’s just him and his little brother, Will, against the whole school.

In this frighteningly dark and captivating novel, Lex Thomas locks readers inside a school where kids don’t fight to be popular, they fight to stay alive.

“Take Michael Grant’s Gone and Veronica Roth’s Divergent, rattle them in a cage until they’re ready to fight to the death, and you’ll have something like this nightmarish debut…Thomas’ whirlwind pace, painful details, simmering sexual content, and moments of truly shocking ultra-violence thrust this movie-ready high school thriller to the head of the class.” – Booklist (starred review)

About Lex Thomas:

Lex received a BA in Drama and English from the University of Virginia and has worked as an actor, director and writer. Thomas graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the Rhode Island School of Design, and now writes, and exhibits his realist oil paintings in Los Angeles.

Lex and Thomas met in a writers’ group in Los Angeles. Their friendship developed as they tried to blow each other’s minds with clips from bizarre movies. Thanks for the free entry! I loved Quarantine and I’ve been anxiously awaiting the next installment. Sometimes I wish I found series like these after the author had written all the books, but then I’d be behind the times 🙂

First off, I didn’t realize these were written by two guys. You don’t normally see a duo of guys writing YA books…it’s often girls…so that’s cool!

anyway, these sound like fun books. Maybe not always realistic, but something that grabs you and doesn’t let go!
