IN A RACE AGAINST TIME, HOW DO YOU KEEP THOSE YOU LOVE SAFE?
Jenny Kramer knows she isn’t normal. After all, not everybody can see the past lives of people around them. When she befriends Ben Daulton, resident new boy, the pair stumbles on an old music box with instructions for “mesmerization” and discover they may have more in common than they thought.
Like a past life.
Using the instructions in the music box, Ben and Jenny share a dream that transports them to Romanov Russia and leads them to believe they have been there together before. But they weren’t alone. Nikolai, the mysterious young man Jenny has been seeing in her own dreams was there, too. When Nikolai appears next door, Jenny is forced to acknowledge that he has traveled through time and space to find her. Doing so means he has defied the laws of time, and the Order, an ominous organization tasked with keeping people in the correct time, is determined to send him back. While Ben, Jenny and Nikolai race against the clock -- and the Order -- the trio discovers a link that joins them in life -- and beyond death.
Okay, I admit, I was first attracted to this book by the gorgeous cover! I love the light colors and how the girl on the cover blends right in. Imagine my surprise when I see time travel as a main theme, and you know how I love time travel.
Jenny has always lived with these strange dreams she couldn't explain as well as a gift to see visions when she touched someone, causing her to rely on wearing gloves to avoid the gift as much as possible. After attending a party and taking part in a Ouija board, stranger things started happening to her. Messages from beyond, the appearance of a strange music box, a mysterious boy and even more intense dreams focusing on a girl named Maria in Romanov Russia.
I absolutely loved the plot idea. A girl having dreams of a past live and how it became so intertwined with her present life was really cool. What was also great here was Jenny meeting a new boy named Ben. They totally hit it off and at first I wondered if he would be a love interest but instead we just get to see a strong friendship develop and I think that was a great dynamic. Usually a new boy spells love interest but the author took a different approach. Not that there isn't a love interest added to the mix, because there definitely is. I won't spoil many details of that but even though it felt a tiny bit instalove-ish in some ways, in other ways it really worked.
There are some great scenes involving some action and suspense and I was easily able to follow along with the time travel workings. There is quite a bit of mystery surrounding the story as well in regards to Jenny's dead mother's past and a secret Order that lives up in the hills and just what they have to do with everything going on in Jenny's life. It all kept me intrigued and unraveled at a great pace. I am not aware of a sequel but I sincerely hope one is in the works because I felt like there were some things left unresolved that I would like to know more about. And I would love the dig into these characters more!
