The Swift Boys & Me by Kody Keplinger
Publication Date: May 27th 2014
Publisher: Scholastic Press

From Goodreads:

Nola Sutton has been best friends and neighbors with the Swift boys for practically her whole life. There’s the youngest, Kevin, who never stops talking; the oldest, Brian, who’s always kind and calm; and then there’s Canaan, the ringleader and Nola’s best-best friend. Nola can’t imagine her life without the Swift boys — they’ll always be like this, always be friends.

But then everything changes overnight.

When the Swifts’ daddy leaves without even saying good-bye, it completely destroys the boys, and all Nola can do is watch. Kevin stops talking and Brian is never around. Even Canaan is drifting away from Nola — hanging out with the neighborhood bullies instead of her.

Nola just wants things to go back to the way they were — the way they’ve always been. She tries to pull the boys back to her, only the harder she pulls, the further away they seem. But it’s not just the Swifts whose family is changing, so is Nola’s, and she needs her best friends now more than ever. Can Nola and the Swift boys survive this summer with their friendships intact, or has everything fallen apart for good?

Nola’s struggle to save her friends, her unwavering hope, and her belief in the power of friendship make Kody Keplinger’s middle-grade debut a poignant story of loss and redemption.

Why I Can't Wait: I honestly never really read Middle Grade novels. In fact, I can't remember the last time I've read one. The early Harry Potter books, maybe? As my oldest gets closer to that age I'm sure I'll eventually explore that avenue some more but for now it's not really for me. EXCEPT this little book here! I am a fan of the author, Kody Keplinger, as it is and really love her style of writing as well as the realness to her characters. This book sounds adorable! And that cover is adorable to match! I will definitely be checking this one out!

WHAT!? Kody Keplinger has a middle grade book coming out?! How did I not know about this! It’ll be interesting to see how Keplinger adapts her writing style to better suit a younger audience 🙂

I’m conflicted on this one. I LOVED A Midsummer’s Nightmare and have been waiting for this cover to be revealed. I didn’t realize it was a middle grade book though. What I love about her writing is the realness and snarkiness in her characters and I just don’t know how that will translate for me in 12 year olds. I still have this on my TBR though. Awesome pick!

I actually remember seeing the cover for this book a while ago, but don’t think I came across the synopsis, but after reading it, I definitely think this will be one book I will be looking out for next year. I’m not typically a middle grade book person either, but I have a feeling this will be a pretty great read! Brilliant pick Sara! 🙂
