A Kid’s Perspective: Judging a Book By Its Cover (51)

January 31, 2014 Judging a Book by its Cover 14

Inspired by an article on Babble called, Judging a Book by Its Cover: A 6-year-old Guesses What Classic Novels Are All About, I have asked my 7 year old what his thoughts are on a few Young Adult covers lying around the house. To take it a step further, I also had him make some cover art!

There’s a bat that flies with wings in the dark with no head. And he can eat star food with his hands. –my 3 year old

This week my 3 year old wanted to help so the book cover thoughts are from him and the cover art was done by my 7 year old. I have no idea where the star food came from. lol Maybe because it flies in the dark? He was also really interested in the claws on the wings.

I apologize for my lack of posts this week. It’s been hard being without my laptop, STILL, and to top it off

Star food! Three year olds are so adorable. I like telling them bits about my own writing to see how they react. They always give such interesting feedback. Or they just decide my characters don’t drink enough milk and like to poke their sisters (hmm, does this sound like a certain three year old I know?).

My 3YO will be 4 soon too! In April. Two boys aren’t o bad but I really don’t know what will happen if I end u with a 3rd. O_O

I see you reviewed Ignite Me. EEP! I’ll have to remember to check your review out after I read it next week. I’m curious and tempted to check it out, even without the spoilers, but at the same time I want to know nothing about it at all! lol :)

    Oh, so cute, both!

So you have a 7-year-old and a 3-year-old? That’s so cool! I have a 4-year-old daughter and an 11-year-old baby girl. They’re so much fun, but it’s also hard work. That’s why I love blogging and reading so much – because it’s the only ‘thing’ I can do for myself right now.

    Anyway, great post.

I wonder, what is star food? The only thing I can think of are those star puffs for babies. Your 3 year old is too cute!

Aw, I miss when Katie said crazy stuff like that. Now her thoughts on books are more earnest, like, “That looks like a bad guy” when she saw the cover of Vicious, which I’m reading now. o_O Why do they have to grow up so fast? I remember that Katie did Angelfall, but I can’t remember if I ever talked her into recreating this one. Shawn did a beautiful job, though, and obviously I love Jacob’s thoughts…I mean, “he can eat star food with his hands” is kinda priceless. :) Hope your laptop is ready soon and that your internet is back up!

I adore Jacob’s interpretations of World After, honestly I would never have thought about seeing a bat on the front cover with no head on, but now that he’s put that idea in my head. That’s all that I can see! Thanks for sharing a great post from both of your sons! :)
