Now that Nikki has rescued Jack, all she wants is to be with him and graduate high school. But Cole tricked Nikki into feeding off him, and she’s begun the process of turning into an Everliving herself... which means she must feed on a Forfeit soon — or die.

Terrified for her survival, Nikki and Jack begin a desperate attempt to reverse the process using any means possible. Even Cole, who they expected to fight them at every turn, has become an unlikely ally — but how long can it last? Nikki needs to feed on Cole to survive, Cole needs Nikki to gain the throne in the Everneath, Jack needs Nikki because she is everything to him — and together, they must travel back to the Underworld to undo Nikki’s fate and make her mortal once more. But Cole isn’t the only one with plans for Nikki: the Queen has not forgotten Nikki’s treachery, and she wants her destroyed for good. Will Nikki be forced to spend eternity in the Underworld, or does she have what it takes to bring down the Everneath once and for all?

In this stunning conclusion to the Everneath trilogy, Brodi Ashton evokes the resiliency of the human spirit and the indomitable power of true love.

The Everneath series stands out to me for a couple reasons. Of course the most obvious is how gorgeous the covers are! I mean seriously, beautiful! But most importantly it is a series where I wasn’t overly invested with the first book but absolutely fell in love with the sequel. Sophomore slump? The exact opposite! How cool is that? I could not wait to see how it ended in this final installment and I think readers will be pleased overall.

Part of what I loved about this series was how perfect each book ending was. The author sure knows how to pack a punch in the final pages and leave you salivating for more, and of course setting the next book up wonderfully. The ending of Everbound (my review) gave us a surprise and a twist, leaving me unsure how this tale could end. To keep Nikki from changing into an everliving, she works with Jack to uncover the Everneath secrets and to find something Cole has stolen. Without revealing too much, we once again take an action packed journey to the Everneath and unravel all kinds of mythology excitement and answers. I did enjoy the plot on a whole but for some reason it wasn’t quite as entertaining and exciting as the previous installment for me. Some parts were slow to get through. My investment dwindled as I read, that is until the end where the author worked her magic and packed that punch I was waiting for. A perfect conclusion that I found beautiful and heartbreaking. It made it all worth it.

The love triangle is quite important in this series. I’ve always been Team Jack with a side of Cole because honestly, Cole is one awesome bad boy you can’t help but to love. Without giving too much away, through a lot of this book I didn’t really care for either guy. *gasp* I know, how dare I say that! Don’t get me wrong, there are some really great moments with each boy. In fact I bookmarked a couple quotes I love so much, though they are extremely spoilery (see bottom of the post – don’t worry, they are concealed). But Jack became this like cartoon-ish type character this time, with super strength and anger. I kept waiting for him to say, “Don’t make me angry” and turn into a giant green Hulk. And Cole was completely different too for awhile. It’s part of the storyline for both to be that way but it just made me miss the characters I fell in love with in the first two books.

But overall, I think fans of this series will enjoy this final journey for the characters. I certainly did. And even though it wasn’t quite as exciting as I hoped for, the ending was just perfection for me.

Okay, sharing the super spoilery quotes BUT only read IF you’ve read the book! YOU’VE BEEN WARNED! (highlight to read)

“But even then I knew. Deep down I knew you would be my beginning and my end. My moral consciousness began taking shape the moment I met you. In that way, my own soul began. And then when I fell in love with you, my own heart began.”

I bit my lip to keep it from trembling. “Give me your heart, “I said.

He tilted his head, leaned forward, watching my eyes the entire time to make sure it was okay, and kissed my lightly on the lips. “You already have it.”

*heart clench*

About Brodi Ashton

Because of two parents who were Greek myth geeks, I grew up thinking the latest fashion trends were inspired by Aphrodite, and a good conversational opener was, “So, which mythological character do you most resemble?” Despite these social shortcomings, I found a great husband who’s always my first reader. We live in Utah with our two young boys, who still have no idea why I’m at the computer all the time.

I received a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Utah and a Master’s degree in International Relations from the London School of Economics.

Ah, only 3 1/2 stars? Hmm. And I managed not to view the spoilers, though the temptation is almost unbearable. And now that I’m *not* getting the ARC I was promised, it’s even tougher to resist. Must know! *le sigh* Sorry this finale didn’t leave you as invested in the story, but gawd, I’m dying to find out what happens!

I’m sorry to hear that the guys weren’t super awesome in this book. I’ve always loved them since the beginning, but it does sound like it’s important to the plot for them to be like this? Hopefully all ends well! I’m planning on reading the series all together later and will read Evertrue then~

I guess that’s a pretty common sentiment that the second book was loads better than the first. I probably wouldn’t have read the second if I didn’t already have a copy. But I’m so glad I did read it! And so excited for this finale!
Ooh I am so curious to see what those quotes are. I’ll have to return once I’ve read the book. In terms of romance, I like Cole better. I think he’s a well-rounded and enigmatic character. I don’t hate Jack, but there’s nothing really special about him. Which is why I ship him and Nikki (I feel similarly about her character as well).
I am glad to hear Ashton provides a great ending once more. I’m glad you liked this one overall, Sara!

I still haven’t started with this series but I have heard amazing things about it so I’ll read it soon. I love this cover a lot. Like you said it’s gorgeous. So glad you enjoyed this one, despite some issues. Great review, Sara 🙂

*grabby hands* Like, extremely grabby hands, really. I finished Everbound in December and MY HEART. I’m now even more invested and really can’t wait to see who she picks. I’ve actually been back and forth, which is odd since I usually pick my side of the triangle and stick with it. The first book, I was Team Jack because it seemed perfect. The second book, I was like COLE COLE COLE. Now I’m not sure. It’s too bad that you didn’t care for either in this book, but I love all the different aspects of this series so at least there’s that. I WANT.
