Rose Hathaway's life will never be the same.
The recent attack on St. Vladimir's Academy devastated the entire Moroi world. Many are dead. And, for the few victims carried off by Strigoi, their fates are even worse. A rare tattoo now adorns Rose's neck, a mark that says she's killed far too many Strigoi to count. But only one victim matters ... Dimitri Belikov. Rose must now choose one of two very different paths: honoring her life's vow to protect Lissa—her best friend and the last surviving Dragomir princess—or, dropping out of the Academy to strike out on her own and hunt down the man she loves. She'll have to go to the ends of the earth to find Dimitri and keep the promise he begged her to make. But the question is, when the time comes, will he want to be saved?
Now, with everything at stake—and worlds away from St. Vladimir's and her unguarded, vulnerable, and newly rebellious best friend—can Rose find the strength to destroy Dimitri? Or, will she sacrifice herself for a chance at eternal love?
Welcome to Day 4 of Vampire Academy week at Forever 17 Books!
Oh Blood Promise, how you slayed me!
It’s probably going to be hard to say too much for the remainder of the series without being spoilery of the previous books due to the total twist they take at the end of the third (and my favorite) installment, Shadow Kiss. So please be aware of the spoilers, just in case you are not a fan of those but I will try to keep my thoughts as vague as I can.
My friend Nereyda warned me early on that no matter what I do, I must have book 4 on hand to start as soon as I finish book 3. Boy was she right! I am SO thankful I had the opportunity to read these back to back. I cannot even imagine the anguish readers suffered by waiting a year for Blood Promise to release. Hell, any of these to publish. There’s something to be said for binge reading a series upon completion. I need to read more series in that manner.
Anyways, of course my library had a copy of every single one of these books EXCEPT this one (My box set STILL hadn’t arrived! Where the hell was it?? Didn’t they know how badly I needed it?!). But then I thought to check out their digital library and ding ding ding! We had a winner!
As I mentioned before, Blood Promise really left a huge opening for the series to undergo some change. Exciting, crazy awesome, and nerve-wracking change. Rose has left school and her best friend Lissa to search for Dimitri and save him the only way she knows how. And I was a totally emotional mess throughout the whole book. For real, there was shaking and everything. I would tear up all the time and the anticipation was killing me! I would often get annoyed when Rose would search out Lissa’s mind because I just wanted to know what would happen next with Rose and Dimitri. And now I realize how little I have touched upon that in this review and the others. And it’s probably because I often preferred what was directly happening with Rose though the insights into Lissa’s mind really gave us a huge benefit of learning important things that were happening back at St. Vladimir’s Academy. As well as Adrian’s continued dream walking. Trust me, he was still very much a presence in the series, becoming even more so as we progressed, and his desire for Rose was so sweet and swoonworthy and… *dreamy sigh* (I’m still Team Dimitri though!)
But seriously guys, I flew through the pages with anxiety and excitement of the best kind! I thoroughly appreciated that Richelle Mead kept to her world building and vampire lore and didn’t alter anything to make it easy. It was hard and it was entertaining. To see a different side of the world we had yet to see so up front? Yeah… amazing with a side of ‘omg this is freaking me out, in a good way!’
I can’t believe I failed to mention this yet but I also discovered the best thing ever while binge reading these books. A twitter friend, @jbquinn, was also doing the same and we were right on track with each other! Having someone to bounce thoughts off of who was in the same boat just made the reading experience that more fun!
If you haven’t started these books and are reading my reviews, the hype is true! They are so worth the sleepless nights of reading!
