Ignazio Vitale is not a good man.

I suspect it, the first time I see him, sense the air of danger that surrounds the man. He has a way of commanding attention, of taking control, of knowing what I'm thinking before I even do.

It's alarming and alluring. It's dark and deadly. It's everything I've ever wanted but the last thing I truly need. Obsession.

It doesn't take him long to draw me into his web, charming me into his bed and trapping me in his life, a life I know nothing about until it's too late. He has secrets, secrets I can't fathom, secrets that make it so I can't walk away, no matter how much I beg him to let me go. I see it sometimes in his eyes, a darkness that's both terrifying and thrilling. He's a monster, wrapped up in a pretty package, and what I find when I unmask him changes everything.

I want to hate him.

Sometimes, I do.

But it doesn't stop me from loving him, too.

Whenever I hear J.M. Darhower is writing a new book I pretty much fall over with excitement. I mean, she has the power to write these stories that not only make me fall in love with the words and characters, but engage me in their depths, shocking me and leaving me on the edge of what is to come, always guessing. Monster in His Eyes was no different!

I want to douse myself in gasoline and set myself ablaze, melting away in the flames just to escape these feelings, but I know it’s useless. Even as a pile of ashes, I’d never get away. He’s a force of nature. The wind would carry me right back to him.

Karissa Reed is a typical college freshman – living the dorm life with her best friend, struggling along in one of her classes with a horrid professor, and trying to ebb the fears and worries of her mother that she is okay in a big and dangerous city alone. When a twist of fate one night puts her in the path of an older man
she once spotted with her professor, it seems maybe more is at play than first met the eye. Karissa is immediately enraptured by Ignazio Vitale. A very charming yet mysterious man, he sweeps her off her feet with expensive dates and sex galore. But he doesn’t profess to be a good man and as Karissa finds herself further and further into his grasp she discovers just how true that really is.

Karissa is young and innocent. Naz is older and oh so dangerous. They couldn’t have been more different. But he awakens something in her she didn’t know. A fire and passion. And Naz was all but willing to take whatever he wanted and show her a whole new way of life. He had the power to leave me swooning but also instill some fear in me, most of which came from that unknown factor about him. Something Karissa often felt as well. He was a force to be reckoned with, a complicated character I couldn’t help but love, even when I tried not to. He was controlling but always within the range Karissa accepted. Their sex was hot, alternating between making love and very rough, but completely consensual, safe words in place in case it became too much for her. He never lied to her about his life but he also wasn’t upfront either, something she was willing to accept. It drove me nuts! In fact, we really don’t find out much about the man until the end, which left me constantly guessing and frantically waiting for the other shoe to drop. And it does, epically.

The whole last 20% of the book or so was so amazing! When secrets were finally revealed I was floored, unable to put the book down until I finished. I had no idea where the end of the book would take us and I loved that feeling of excitement that J.M. Darhower does oh so well. The storytelling was so well-crafted, bits and pieces woven through its entirety and exploding at just the right moment for a wonderful effect! I couldn’t have asked for anything better! There’s so much action and suspense, murder and intrigue. The novel ends at precisely the right moment but also has the ability to leave you dying to get your hands on its sequel. I am now completely invested in how the story will end for Karissa and Naz and thoroughly looking forward to Torture in Her Soul, out this fall! Fans of romance and suspense will not be disappointed!

“The opposite of love isn’t hate, Karissa. It’s indifference. You’re a passionate person, and love and hate… it’s not a far stretch from one to the other. They both take passion, someone getting under your skin and consuming you. And I ate you alive, sweetheart. You never had a chance.”
