Don't say it unless you mean it…

It's a simple concept, one I've said time and again, but something people don't seem to comprehend. You should choose every syllable carefully, because you never know when somebody will hold you to your word.

Somebody like me.

I'm not a good man. I'm not. I know. I have enough darkness inside of me to rid the world of every stitch of light. But there's one I could never harm, one light I couldn't bring myself to snuff out.

Karissa.

She thinks I'm a monster, and maybe I am. I taunt her with my touch, get a thrill out of torturing her soul. But I'm not the only one. The world is full of monsters, and I'm not the most dangerous one out there.

Not even close…

God help me, I love her.

I do.

And God help anyone who tries to take her from me.

Earlier this year I read and loved Monster in His Eyes by J.M. Darhower. So refreshing to have a sequel only 5 months later! I was so excited, and nervous, to see how things wrapped up for these characters and I was not disappointed!

The first book was told in the point of view of Karissa, a college student who finds herself wrapped up with a much older and dangerous man, Ignazio. Torture to Her Soul continues their story but is told from his perspective. With the discoveries made about Ignazio’s past and how it intertwines with Karissa’s life, their relationship has grown tense, leaving Naz waiting for the inevitable blowup because as much as she still loves him, she hates him too, with good reason. It was a fine line they were walking. It left me feeling on edge as well because I wasn’t so certain which way things might go between the two. One minute she is pushing him away, refusing to communicate. The next minute they are getting hot and steamy! Their chemistry was insane and the sex scenes once again are no holds barred.

The point of view change was really smart in this sequel. Naz is very complex and mysterious so we get to learn more about what makes him tick, how he became the often detached man that he is. For all his hate and anger, he has a fierce love for Karissa, willing to do anything for her no matter the risk. He’s one of those characters that maybe you shouldn’t love because of the bad things he does, and we get to see that firsthand this time. But it made his character so much more compelling. And I loved not knowing exactly what to expect from him. He can be scary one moment but then know how to sweep you off your feet the next. Karissa awakened something inside him that had been dormant for a long time. Seeing that continue to blossom as I read almost humanized him a bit more. Made him more real and wonderful, despite the hardcore killer vibe he had going on. Some of my favorite moments were simple scenes where Naz is joking around with Karissa about how he always repeats what she says or when he spent time seeking out his parents, even if he was unwelcomed. Those moments right there stuck with me.

With their relationship at a crucial point and so much unresolved danger heading into it, I had no idea where this sequel would go, if it were possible to pull off a believable ‘happy’ ending for the mess these two were in. But J.M. Darhower managed to create an ending that was exactly how it should be, even including a wonderful bonus scene that is not to be missed at the end. I was extremely happy and a little sad to see their story come to a close. I had grown very fond of Karissa and especially Naz. Torture to Her Soul has action, suspense, murder, but a whole lot of heart. Fans of the first book will not be disappointed and I implore new readers to give this duology a chance! Another fantastic series from this author.

We’re a tragedy in the making. The game of tug-of-war we’re playing will end up destroying us, because she doesn’t have it in her to surrender, and I can’t let go.
