A Kid’s Perspective: Judging a Book By Its Cover (53)

October 10, 2014 Judging a Book by its Cover 8

Inspired by an article on Babble called, Judging a Book by Its Cover: A 6-year-old Guesses What Classic Novels Are All About, I have asked my 7 year old what his thoughts are on a few Young Adult covers lying around the house. To take it a step further, I also had him make some cover art!

Well, it’s been 8 whole months since I’ve done one of these with Shawn! I’m excited to get back into it and he is too! We’ve just been so busy and he lost some interest before, but judging by the fact he asked to do a few of them yesterday and today, I believe we are back on track! We are now at the point where he can write down his thoughts, which is not only fun but also coincides with his learning at school. Shawn didn’t realize the book’s connection with The Wizard of Oz but he did a great job!!! And apparently the bad people won out. Uh-oh.

My 4 year old is showing interest in wanting to follow his big brother’s footsteps so pretty soon we may have even more to show you!

I hope you enjoyed Shawn’s artwork and thoughts this week! Don’t forget to let us know what you think!

Awww, I’m so glad he wanted to start doing these again, too! And I LOVE that he’s writing down his own thoughts now, too. I should work on that with Katie. I was so sad that school slackened Katie’s interest in it last year, but she’s all excited about it again, too. 🙂 I don’t think Katie would have gotten the Wizard of Oz reference either, even though it’s one of her favorite movies. Maybe, though. I’ll have to show her my copy and see what she thinks, lol.

Love it! My daughter read the wizard of oz last year in first grade and she loved it. She saw when I was doing the book look for this cover and said it looked like Dorothy’s dress. When I told her it was about Dorothy, she bugged me to let her listen to the audiobook. I did and she really liked it. After I had to explain to her that Dorothy was mean this time and that it was just a fake story 🙂

I have to say, this is one of my favorite things to read and I love his interpretations of the covers. Now we read his take on the book…It’s just awesome. What a great way to encourage a love of books and art. Parenting done right..I’m glad it’s back!!!
