For fans of Gone Girl, I Hunt Killers, and TV's How to Get Away with Murder.
Max Cantrell has never been a big fan of the truth, so when the opportunity arises to sell forged permission slips and cover stories to his classmates, it sounds like a good way to make a little money and liven up a boring senior year. With the help of his friends Preston and Parvati, Max starts Liars, Inc. Suddenly everybody needs something and the cash starts pouring in. Who knew lying could be so lucrative?
When Preston wants his own cover story to go visit a girl he met online, Max doesn’t think twice about hooking him up. Until Preston never comes home. Then the evidence starts to pile up—terrifying clues that lead the cops to Preston’s body. Terrifying clues that point to Max as the murderer.
Can Max find the real killer before he goes to prison for a crime he didn’t commit? In a story that Kirkus Reviews called "Captivating to the very end," Paula Stokes starts with one single white lie and weaves a twisted tale that will have readers guessing until the explosive final chapters.
I love a good mystery! I like the excitement and feel of the ‘whodunnit’ and the path it takes me as a reader as I piece clues together and try to figure it all out. Liars, Inc. was everything I hoped it would be!
Max is kind of a quiet guy. A little bit of a troublemaker at times, but someone who is reserved, preferring to keep to himself or just with his best friend, Preston, and his girlfriend, Parvati. He has lived a rough life, losing both parents at an early age, living on the streets as well as in a group home before he was adopted by the Cantrell’s. Even among his friends, he still felt a little outcast, like he didn’t always quite fit in with their popularity. But they meant a lot to him. Together they start Liars, Inc., providing alibis and such for their classmates. That is until Preston needed his own alibi and goes missing, all evidence pointing to Max’s involvement.
I’m not going to touch much more on the plot since obviously it is a mystery and one you need to experience for yourself. I will say that Stokes did a great job leaving just enough clues to keep the wheels spinning! I had a lot of theories. Some were right and others I never even thought of! It was exciting to see how it would all play out, who Max could trust and who he couldn’t. I found some people surprised me and of course there were times I was wanting to smack Max upside his head for the risky choices he was making while trying to investigate for himself, but he turned out to be such a dynamic character. He was loyal and forgiving, an overall great guy. Someone I would want to be friends with and investigating my disappearance, if such an instance arose.
Liars, Inc. was a quick read for me. One of those books that you read and read, look down at the page count and go ‘woah, I read all that already?’. I continue to be a huge fan of this author and her versatility to write in any genre. I always look forward to what she’ll spring on me next! Due yourselves a favor and pick this one up!
