He makes the rules. She breaks them all.

A new start. It's the only thing keeping Allie Harper going, when she packs up her life and moves across the country to Woodshill, Oregon. She's about to start college, desperate to leave the ghosts of her past behind her. Even if that means never talking to her parents again.

Now the hard part - finding an apartment before classes start. Just when it seems she'll have to live out of her car, Allie visits one more place. It's beautiful. With one exception: can she stand being roommates with campus bad boy Kaden White? Sure, Kaden is sexy with his tattoos and careless attitude, but he's also an arrogant jerk. With nowhere else to go, Allie moves in.

The first thing Kaden does is make a set of rules. Either Allie obeys, or she's out:

1. Don't talk about your girl problems.
2. Keep your mouth shut if I bring someone home.
3. We will NEVER hook up.

Easy enough, thinks Allie. Who would want to get involved with a brute like Kaden? But the more she gets to know him, the more she sees beyond his gruff facade. He, too, is harboring some painful secrets. For Kaden and Allie, it gets harder and harder to ignore the sparks between them. And the lines between the rules start to blur-

Begin Again is a beautiful romance that shows us just how possible it is to start over. To find freedom in heartbreak and love in the most unlikely places.

There are some tropes that continue to attract my attention time and time again. Roommates turning to a romance is one of those tropes I just cannot get enough of and exactly what I found with Begin Again.

Allie is running away from her past and her atrocious family to start over and attend college on her own. Of course finding a living situation becomes more of a problem than she initially thought. When she meets Kaden, her last option, she isn’t very impressed with his attitude but being out on her own with her freedom makes it all worth it and perhaps there is more behind Kaden than meets the eye.

Overall I found this to be a decent read. On the plus side, I really liked Allie’s determination to be her own person and to stick up for herself against those who mistreated her. The story also tackles the topic of sexual assault and that felt very relevant to what is happening and currently being highlighted in the news. It’s a pretty quick read and had some special moments between the two characters that I truly loved. On the downside, I just couldn’t find myself becoming much of a fan of Kaden by the end. He is the asshole type with a lot of baggage he needed to work out on his own. He tended to close himself off and push people away and I wish we saw a little more turnaround from that before the end so I could have gotten behind the romance a little more. It was just a tad too much push pull too close to the end for a satisfying enough resolution.

I do think many romance readers will enjoy this novel and not only the love story between Allie and Kaden, but Allie’s journey of independence. The series does continue with other characters we’ve met in Begin Again and I plan on keeping my eye out for those to be released.
