A Promise of Fire Blurb:

Catalia "Cat" Fisa is a powerful clairvoyant known as the Kingmaker. This smart-mouthed soothsayer has no interest in her powers and would much rather fly under the radar, far from the clutches of her homicidal mother. But when an ambitious warlord captures her, she may not have a choice…

Griffin is intent on bringing peace to his newly conquered realm in the magic-deprived south. When he discovers Cat is the Kingmaker, he abducts her. But Cat will do everything in her power to avoid her dangerous destiny and battle her captor at every turn. Although up for the battle, Griffin would prefer for Cat to help his people willingly, and he's ready to do whatever it takes to coax her…even if that means falling in love with her.

Breath of Fire Blurb:

SHE'S DESTINED TO DESTROY THE WORLD...
"Cat" Catalia Fisa has been running from her destiny since she could crawl. But now, her newfound loved ones are caught between the shadow of Cat's tortured past and the threat of her world-shattering future. So what's a girl to do when she knows it's her fate to be the harbinger of doom? Everything in her power.

BUT NOT IF SHE CAN HELP IT
Griffin knows Cat is destined to change the world-for the better. As the realms are descending into all-out war, Cat and Griffin must embrace their fate together. Gods willing, they will emerge side-by-side in the heart of their future kingdom...or not at all.

I love when my Goodreads timeline can introduce me to books I may never have known about otherwise. The Kingmaker Chronicles is a series that kept popping up so after some investigating into the blurb and high praise, I decided to take a chance and one-click the two books already available. I don’t read a lot of Adult Fantasy novels but if this series is anything to go on then I should do so more often!

The gist of the story is that there are three realms divided, each controlled by powerful magic holders called Magoi. But for the first time ever, those without magic, Hoi Polloi, have taken over the Sinta realm. Cat has been hiding who she is and her powers for years but when the new Sinta royals set their eyes on her, they capture her in hopes of using those powers to their advantage. And then everything changes…

When I started A Promise of Fire I had no idea how much Greek Mythology would come into play. It’s a huge aspect of the plotline and if I’m being honest, my favorite part! Cat seems to be the darling of the Gods with a destiny she cannot escape from. All sorts of mythical creatures and monsters can be found throughout for some epic edge of your seat action. Seriously, book two has so much happening around every corner that is is so hard to put down!

Of course there is a romance that brews between Cat and the one who captures her in more ways than one, Griffin. They have a serious push-pull, angry sort of sexual tension going on but it was undeniable that these two were destined to be together. I loved watching Cat open herself up to Griffin and work out the fears that had been holding her back. She is a force to be reckoned with and completely reckless time and time again and I love how she is unapologetically herself no matter how hard Griffin tries to rein her in. There is lots to love with the other characters we meet along the way as well, especially the Beta Team who were originally responsible for her capture. Even though they don’t meet under the best of circumstances, a strong friendship and protectiveness builds along the way. I’m definitely enamored with them all and find myself rooting for the happily ever that they all deserve.

If I have to nitpick, I can’t deny a cheese factor that occasionally takes place. And there are moments that are a little too over the top for me, most notably the beginning of Breath of Fire which had me scratching my head a bit, but luckily the magic of the story outshines those instances and a completely engaging story unfolds with every turn of the page, or swipe of my kindle as it so happened.

Thank goodness the finale is just around the corner! I cannot wait to see what happens to these characters next! This is definitely a series to check out and they are reasonably priced on Amazon too!

About Amanda Bouchet

Amanda Bouchet grew up in New England where she spent much of her time tromping around in the woods and making up grand adventures in her head. It was inevitable that one day she would start writing them down. Drawing on her Greek heritage for the setting and on her love of all things daring and romantic for the rest, her debut trilogy, The Kingmaker Chronicles, took form. She writes what she loves to read: epic exploits, steamy romance, and characters that make you laugh and cry.

A French master’s graduate and former English teacher, Amanda lives in Paris, France. She met her husband while studying abroad, and the family now includes two bilingual children who will soon be correcting her French.
