Our lives are a collection of moments. Some utterly painful and full of yesterday's hurts. Some beautifully hopeful and full of tomorrow's promises.
I’ve had many moments in my lifetime, moments that changed me, challenged me. Moments that scared me and engulfed me. However, the biggest ones—the most heartbreaking and breathtaking ones—all included him.
I was ten years old when I lost my voice. A piece of me was stolen away, and the only person who could truly hear my silence was Brooks Griffin. He was the light during my dark days, the promise of tomorrow, until tragedy found him. Tragedy that eventually drowned him in a sea of memories.
This is the story of a boy and girl who loved each other, but didn’t love themselves. A story of life and death. Of love and broken promises.
Just a few week ago I read the 4th book in this series, The Gravity of Us, and fell in love with the author’s writing. She has a wonderful way with words and just knew I needed to check out the previous books too (each reads as a standalone). The Silent Waters was another great novel by this author!
The story is told in three parts. Part one focuses on Maggie as a young child as she and her dad move into a new home with a new blended family. When she meets her step brother’s best friend, Brooks, she knows he is the boy she wants to marry, even if he still thinks of girls as icky at that age. Then Maggie goes through a horrifically traumatic event and is forever changed. She not only stops speaking, afraid to use her voice, but also develops agoraphobia and refuses to leave her home. Brooks remains by her side and a great friendship forms until it evolves into a romance in the teen years during part two. Obviously a relationship between the two given the circumstances isn’t the easiest. But man did I love how committed Brooks was to doing whatever he could to be what Maggie needed. Part three delves into adulthood and we see how everything comes full circle in their lives.
“I need you to know that even if you decide to never speak again, you’ll always have someone around to hear you, Maggie. All right? I’ll always be there to listen to your silence.”
I loved how this story was divided in parts. It really allows us to see how the events in their lives affect not only themselves throughout the years, but also those around them. Brooks was so sweet, patient, and understanding. And Maggie broke my heart for what she was going through. They were so perfect for each other with so many sweet moments like vows permanently etched on a white board and taking the time to spend five minutes together to just… be. These details were incredible special and made the story so heartfelt. There is a strong theme of sticking with those you love through the good times and bad and I adored the story that unfolded for these characters within that. This is such a dynamic author and I can’t wait to read more from her!
“Not all broken things need to be fixed. Sometimes they just need to be loved. It would be a shame if only people who were whole were deserving of love.”
