I’ve become an expert at avoiding things that could hurt me—which means I will figure out how to stay away from Marco Leone.

Seventeen-year-old Frankie Devereux would do anything to forget the past. Haunted by the memory of her boyfriend’s death, she lives her life by one dangerous rule: Nothing matters. At least, that’s what Frankie tells herself after a reckless mistake forces her to leave her privileged life in the Heights to move in with her dad—an undercover cop. She transfers to a public high school in the Downs, where fistfights don’t faze anyone and illegal street racing is more popular than football.

Marco Leone is the fastest street racer in the Downs. Tough, sexy, and hypnotic, he makes it impossible for Frankie to ignore him—and how he makes her feel. But the risks Marco takes for his family could have devastating consequences for them both. When Frankie discovers his secret, she has to make a choice. Will she let the pain of the past determine her future? Or will she risk what little she has left to follow her heart?

I’m pretty sure I added this book to my TBR with only reading the first paragraph of the summary. I immediately knew this was a must read for me with a storyline that reminded me of the works of Katie McGarry, another author I adore. And I definitely found exactly what I was looking for!

Our main character, Frankie, is recovering from witnessing the murder of her long time friend and boyfriend. The event has left her with PTSD and only bits and pieces of her memory from that night. When she transfers to a new school after moving in with her undercover cop father, she meets street racer Marco and enters a new dangerous world.

I loved the entire plot! Like this was seriously the kind of story that hooked me from the first page, one where I stayed up way too late at night to keep reading, and one I dropped everything the next morning to finish. Frankie was a little broken when we meet her but it wasn’t overwhelming to the story given what she had gone through before our story takes place. We follow her as she rediscovers herself and comes to terms with with what happened and works to move forward. Marco was the bad boy with a heart of gold. I adored his relationship and dedication to his sister. It wasn’t just these two that I loved though. I really loved Frankie’s dad. I almost felt stuck in the middle of a parent and child dynamic. Of course I am feeling and wanting what our protagonist does in her rebelliousness but as a parent myself I am agreeing with her father on a level too. lol I also really liked Frankie’s new friend, Cruz. I wouldn’t mind a future book for her… (hint, hint)

As far as gripes, just a couple things brought this book slightly down for me. I never considered myself to be a reader who despised instalove, but lately I’ve noticed it has been bothering me more and more and sadly that was the case here. Instant connection, great! Rushed ‘I love yous’, not so much. Speaking of rushed, the ending felt that way a little too. I wanted more and couldn’t believe what was happening with just a few pages left. But it does wrap up nicely.

Overall this was one read I would absolutely recommend for anyone looking for a good YA contemporary romance! It’s a quick read that is hard to put down!
