Happy New Year everyone! Upon glancing at my list of books read in 2017, I noticed I read a lot of books by authors I already know and love but there were a few new ones to me that left quite an impression and have me excited to check out more of their work!

2017 Debut Authors (so obviously new to me, duh)

Angie Thomas – Author of The Hate U Give
What a fantastic debut! She is such a powerful storyteller that leaves you thinking about the story long after you finished reading it. I look forward to her future!

Kristen Ciccarelli – Author of The Last Namsara
I was so impressed with the story that unfolded in The Last Namsara. Rich world building and dragons left me anxious for more from the series and the author.

Stephanie Garber – Author of Caraval
Caraval released last January but I didn’t get around to it til fall so it feels like I read it eons after everyone else. I’m so glad I got around to it because this is one author to watch!

What Took Me So Long Authors

Renée Ahdieh
I read both books in The Wrath and the Dawn duology at the beginning of the year and was able to meet her at the Rochester Teen Book Festival in May. She is delightful! I desperately need to get to Flame in the Mist this year!

Barry Lyga
I’ve had a couple of his books on my shelf for years and just never got around to them but I picked up his 2017 release, Bang and loved it!

Lisa Maxwell
I have a few of this author’s work on my TBR but I picked up The Last Magician and it had time travel, magic, and so much more!

Rebecca Phillips
These Things I’ve Done was a favorite read of mine this year. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the author has written a whole slew of novels previously and now I must go back and backtrack through them!

Becky Albertalli
Yes, I finally read Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda this year. Yes, it was just as amazing as everyone says!

George R.R. Martin
So yeah, finally read A Game of Thrones. Need to work on the rest of the series now!

Lauren Blakely
I can sometimes be a little picky with romance novels that stand out and that’s exactly what I found with The Knocked Up Plan. I look forward to checking out her other novels as well.

Angie Thomas, Renee Adhieh, and Becky Albertalli all made my list as well. I haven’t read The Wrath and the Dawn or Simon v. the Homo sapiens Agenda yet. But I loved Flame in the Mist and The Upside of Unrequited.
